Cancer Resources & Advocacy is a consulting service for individuals and organizations, focused on meeting the needs of families while also working to improve access to quality, comprehensive care for cancer and other life-threatening or chronic diseases, conditions, or disabilities.
This service was developed as a result of my own personal experience with life-threatening illness and my professional background in social services, health care, education, and cultural competency work. My diagnosis in early 1996 with an aggressive form of cancer that did not respond to standard treatments, required many changes in my life, including a change of work focus. After leaving the child welfare field, I began to devote myself exclusively to helping address the many unmet needs of cancer patients and their families. My multifaceted background has been a great asset in the quest to find comprehensive help for clients.
I am a graduate of Boston University and the University of Washington School of Social Work. I was trained and worked as a community health educator in Brazil, where I initially served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Additionally, I am trained as a medical interpreter. I also serve as an advisor to cancer patient groups and professional organizations in the USA and several other countries, primarily in Latin America. A list of my current publications and presentations is available on this site.
- Association of Oncology Social Work
- Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers
- Intercultural Cancer Council
